Buying a used car needs careful thought. To make sure you’re getting a good deal, there are some key things you should look out for. This handy checklist from Mr. Tyre will cover everything you should consider before signing on the dotted line.
The Appearance of the Car
Exterior Condition:
Look for signs of rust, dents, scratches and mismatched paint, as they can indicate poor maintenance or previous accidents.
Tyre Tread:
Check the depth of the tyre tread using a tread depth gauge or the “20p test” to ensure they are not excessively worn, as this may require immediate replacement.
Body Panels Alignment:
Check if the body panels are properly aligned, as uneven gaps between panels may suggest repairs due to accidents.
Fluid Leaks:
Inspect the ground beneath the car for any signs of fluid leaks, such as oil or coolant, as leaks could indicate potential mechanical issues.
Interior Condition:
Check the seats, carpets, dashboard and other interior components for excessive wear and tear, which may suggest high mileage or neglect.
Test Driving the Car
Engine Performance:
Pay attention to the engine’s responsiveness, smooth acceleration and any unusual noises, such as knocking or rattling, as these could be indicators of mechanical problems.
Braking System:
Test the brakes for responsiveness and check for any vibrations or unusual noises when applying them, which may signal brake wear or issues.
Steering and Suspension:
Evaluate the steering responsiveness, stability and smoothness of the ride, as excessive play or vibrations could indicate problems with the steering or suspension system.
Transmission:
Test the shifting of gears (in both automatic and manual transmissions) for smoothness, and ensure there are no delays or jerks during gear changes.
Electronics and Controls:
Test all electrical features, such as lights, air conditioning, wipers and infotainment system, to ensure they are functioning properly.
The Paperwork
Running a HPI Check:
Perform a HPI Check or a similar vehicle history report to gather crucial information about the car’s background. This check will provide details on previous accidents, ownership history, mileage consistency and any outstanding recalls or outstanding finance.
Service and Maintenance Records:
Ask for maintenance records to verify if the car has been regularly serviced and if major repairs have been conducted, which can give insight into its overall condition.
Vehicle Registration and VIN:
Check that the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the paperwork matches the one on the car, and verify the registration details, including the current owner’s name and address.
MOT and Tax Documents:
Review the most recent MOT (Ministry of Transport) certificate to ensure the car has passed all required safety inspections, and check the tax documents to ensure they are up to date.
