Why are my tyres brown & discoloured?

Have you noticed that your tyres have changed colour over time, or have developed a rusty brown hue on the sidewall? 

Tyre discolouration is a common occurrence that is observed to happen in certain instances. In this article, we’ll take you through the most notable causes, along with some ways to prevent and remedy the situation. 

What causes tyre discolouration? 

Tyre discolouration is also known as tyre blooming. The process can result in a rusty hue forming, usually seen on the sidewalls and outer casing. If allowed to worsen, tyre blooming may result in entirely brown tyres. 

This gradual discolouration is caused by a component chemical of the rubber, called antiozonant, which is added to the ingredients in tyre manufacturing to prevent ozone from degrading the quality of the tyre. 

Eventually though, this anti-ozonant can push its way to the outer edges of the tyre and react with oxygen in the air. This chemical reaction may leave behind a brownish residue on the tyre, which can build up and discolour the tyre over time. 

How can I prevent tyre discolouration? 

Tyre blooming is a fairly common occurrence that will crop up for many motorists. However, you can slow down this discolouration with tyre care and cleaning. 

On a regular basis, it’s wise to clean tyres with a suitable dry and stiff brush in order to remove dirt – never use brushes with steel, as they may cause punctures and always take care when brushing to avoid scratches. 

There is also the option to use and apply a chemical cleaner to the tyre, leaving it for a period of time, before thoroughly hosing it off. However, you may wish to use soap and water instead for a gentler effect. Either way, use your brush with your chosen cleaning agent and ensure that everything is thoroughly washed off with a hose afterwards. 

For further protection, you may wish to apply a layer of black tyre lacquer over the surface of the rubber. If in doubt, always follow the manufacturer’s guidance. 

Is there anything else I can do? 

While tyre discolouration will not necessarily damage the functionality of your tyres, their visual appearance will certainly be negatively affected. Despite attempts to keep the tyres clean, if time has finally caught up with them, then it might be time for a fresh set.
